The fundamental learning objective in any course is an in depth cognitive understanding of the concept which is then assessed through a variety of assessment techniques. ‘Wimba’ is the education technology that I have selected to implement in one of my courses this semester. I do not have any previous experience with Wimba but I think it will help my students accomplish their learning goals more effectively. Wimba will give them expansion of time and space as it allows them to learn anywhere and anytime. It also gives them the flexibility of individual pacing and sequence. It permits them to break step with the class and go at a pace and order that suits each student better.
My pedagogical approach is individual student oriented. I intend to blend conventional classroom learning with online distance learning so that I can reach out to all the students in my classroom, even the ones who are physically not present in the class room. As almost all the students are working, they come to college after work. Some of the students are off-shore students which imply they might need to travel frequently or have to be away for on-site duties for two or more weeks in a row! Also, a fairly large proportion of students commute from other emirates to reach in time for the class. Inevitably, there are frequent delays and at times they are too exhausted after a hectic day at work to drive all the way to Dubai for any class. I strongly feel that these working and off-shore students can immensely benefit from the use of Wimba in this particular course.
Hi Seema,
ReplyDeleteYou make it sound so exciting! When you say that you embed a wide range of activities in the Wimba classroom, what do you mean? Are there any elements that a student can interact with even if they aren't in a live session?
I'm showing my ignorance, but you've aroused my curiosity...
Dean
Dean, I am glad you found my post interesting :)
DeleteBeing a novice at Wimba myself, I am experimenting with activities which can engage students effectively. In my first Wimba class session, I tried the multiple choice line of questioning. I could preview all the answers trickling in, while I reinforced the concept verbally. Once all the results were there, I published the results for further online class discussion. 18/20 students were present and participated through talk option, chat box and the Wimba tool bar.
I was a little disappointed to find out that Wimba is online but not as interactive as I had imagined it to be… students cannot use it as a virtual white board! Even I could not use the stylus as the writing did not turn to be legible. So, I had to resort to typing instead.
Hi
ReplyDeleteI think most of us teaching evening students are facing similar situation where students miss important classes due to their work commitment and then it becomes very hard for them to catch up. Specially in courses like finance and accounting where each topic is linked with previous topic. So if the student miss one important class then he is lost throughout the semester.
Your idea of using Wimba technology with such students is excellent as it will give them opportunity to attend classes which they have missed. I haven’t used Wimba myself in class room as a teacher but I have attended many lectures as student on Wimba. It’s really nice tool to present lectures when students are at distance. The only downside is that students have to be online to attend the live session. If they are not online then they cannot take advantage. Many teachers overcome this by recording live sessions so that if students are not able to join live session they can view recorded session later. I ll suggest that when you do your Wimba live sessions make sure you can record them for students who cannot join live sessions.
Thanks Owais for reading the post and sharing your experiences!
DeleteYou are spot on when you say that being able to view recorded sessions is of huge advantage to students. Realizing the benefits of being able to relive the whole session, I had archived it :)
It is one of key attributes which gives Wimba the edge over other education technologies. Students who missed the session or students who would like to review it, at their own pace have the option now… breaking step and using technology as intellectual partner.
